Four-star linebacker Roquan Smith, tabbed as a potential pivotal piece of Jeremy Pruitt’s incoming haul on defense, has picked UCLA over Georgia.

Smith, the nation’s No. 2 outside linebacker, was one of several sought-after uncommitted SEC targets who made his announcement on Wednesday during ESPNU’s National Signing Day marathon. UCLA came into the picture late and hosted Smith last weekend, but the Bulldogs were confident the talented tackler from Montezuma, Ga., to stay home.

He didn’t.

“I just wanted to get out and do my own thing, experience something different,” Smith said. “I can step out there and develop into what I want to be.”

It was a tough decision for Smith who tweeted Tuesday he wasn’t sure where to sign:

UPDATE: Roquan Smith reopened his recruitment according to his coach at 4:30pm EST.
