Colorado State has found its man to replace Jim McElwain as head coach.

Per a report from Terry Frei of the Denver Post, the Rams are close to naming Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo as their next head coach.

Like McElwain, who was offensive coordinator at Alabama prior to becoming the CSU head coach in 2012, the Rams are going back to a similar candidate in Bobo, who has been the offensive coordinator at Georgia since 2007. He was a quarterback for the Bulldogs from 1994-97 and has spent all but one season coaching at his alma mater.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt spoke about Bobo’s potential opportunity at CSU last week while the team was preparing to face Louisville in the Belk Bowl. He’s not surprised that Bobo was being considered for the head coaching position.

“Mike’s a great coach. He understands the game very well. He’s an old-school ball coach that has a great edge about him … he sees the big picture, too,” Richt said. “He’s got all of the ingredients and I’m not shocked that this is happening. He’s had other opportunities as well.”

According to Frei’s report, Bobo is expected to be officially introduced Tuesday. There’s been no official report on whether Bobo will remain on staff through Georgia’s bowl game.
