Coming off a disappointing home loss to Mississippi State last week, LSU welcomes New Mexico State into Tiger Stadium on Saturday evening. The Aggies, a member of the Sun Belt Conference, come in at 2-2. They have some explosive offensive talent, and a young defense struggling to find its way. Coach Doug Martin is in his second year at the school, and they’ve already equaled their win total from a year ago despite losing two straight.

Here are five Aggies that LSU fans should get to know before kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

  1. WR Teldrick Morgan: Morgan has been one of the most productive receivers in FBS through a third of the season. His 31 catches and 464 yards each put him at No. 7 in the country, and he has 4 TD grabs as well. The Aggies try to get the ball out quickly, and one of the ways they do that is by hitting Morgan with wide receiver screens. LSU’s secondary will have to be ready for those quick-hitters to contain Morgan.
  2. QB Tyler Rogers: New Mexico State coach Doug Martin likes to throw the ball, and Rogers is his trigger man. Rogers is airing it out 39.5 times per game, completing better than 60 percent of his passes. The sophomore has thrown at least 2 TD passes each game, but he’s also been picked off twice in each of the Aggies last two games, both losses. Rogers is capable of extending plays with his legs and picked up 44 yards on the ground last week.
  3. RB Larry Rose III: The Aggies’ leading rusher is a true freshman, having started three of the team’s four games so far. Rose struggled a week ago coming off of an injury, with 31 yards on 15 carries, but he averaged more than 5 yards per carry in the first two games of his career. Rose is also the Aggies’ leading receiver out of the backfield, with 6 catches for 36 yards. He is on the small side, listed at 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds.
  4. DE Jay Eakins: One of the few seniors on a freshman-heavy defensive unit, Eakins has made an impact all over. He’s fourth on the team in tackles (26) and leads the Aggies in tackles for loss (2.5) and sacks (1.0). After transferring from junior college a year ago, Eakins has come on strong in his senior season, already nearly equaling his tackles total from a year ago.
  5. LB Rodney Butler: Butler is the leading tackler on the young Aggies defense, already racking up 47 tackles in 4 games. He also has a pick-6 on the season, taking an interception back 40 yards to paydirt in Week 2. Butler is a smaller linebacker, listed at 6-foot-1 and 212 pounds. Nearly all of LSU’s running backs are bigger than that, so Butler and the rest of the linebacking corps may have trouble bringing them down.
