Days after watching Mississippi State run right through the interior of LSU’s defense over and over again for 302 yards, the Tigers got some bad news when Quentin Thomas suffered an arm injury. In his Monday press conference, coach Les Miles said that Thomas was “nicked” and would miss “a week or two” after the injury.

Thomas had suffered a torn biceps before the season, but had played through the injury for the first four games, with Miles saying he was surprised with the progress Thomas had made.

LSU’s depth at the position has been a major issue, despite Miles saying he is unconcerned. Christian LaCouture has been starting alongside Thomas but after those two, only freshman Davon Godchaux was getting significant playing time at DT. A trio of redshirt freshmen — Frank Herron, Greg Gilmore and Marquedius Bain — have struggled to earn snaps, and neither Herron or Gilmore got any playing time at all in the Mississippi State loss. Miles said in the press conference that those three would see more playing time against New Mexico State this Saturday. Lewis Neal, who has played mostly defensive end in his career, saw time at tackle and impressed Miles against the Bulldogs, so he is an option inside as well.

If Thomas does indeed miss two games, LSU will be in trouble against Auburn on Oct. 4. The Tigers have the No. 21 rushing offense in the country, just two spots behind Mississippi State, and feature a quarterback in Nick Marshall who can punish them just as Dak Prescott did.
