The Dallas Cowboys had their eye on the post-Tony Romo era with the 2016 draft, and it looks like both owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett see a long future in Dallas for former Dak Prescott.

When talking with the media, Garrett praised both Prescott’s physical and intangible qualities at length:

“You have to look at his production first and what he did down there. He won a lot of games at Mississippi State. He and others took that team to the No. 1 ranking. If you ask a lot of people there – coaches and players – he’s just one of those guys that they feel has such great intangible qualities. He’s a great leader, positively impacts everybody there, has played big in big games and done a lot of really great things on the field. Physically, he’s big. He’s strong. He can throw it. He can run. He’s a very experienced player… When you talk to people at Mississippi State, line one is intangible qualities and leadership. He has such a positive impact on his teammates. You add that to his athletic ability and there is a lot to get excited about.”

Draft experts wondered if Prescott’s DUI arrest in March would raise character concerns. It certainly didn’t deter Dallas from drafting him, as Jones had high praise for Prescott’s character and leadership qualities while also acknowledging the “it” factor:

“It’s exciting because his upside is about his character. Jason reminded me, as it would have it, we spent a couple of times in the offseason with Roger Staubach. Roger said to both of us at the same time, ‘somebody who the team will really follow – that they believe in him.’ Invariably, when you ask about Dak, that is the first that came out was magnetism, that leadership that involved. Now, I don’t want to write a check with that he has to cover with you or the fans, but he’s got ‘it.'”

Prescott likely does not have to worry about covering Jones’ “check” any time soon. Most NFL analysts predict the Cowboys will develop Prescott over multiple seasons as Romo’s career winds down.
