It looks like new Missouri defensive coordinator Barry Odom is bringing at least one coach with him from Memphis.

According to reports, the Tigers are set to hire Ryan Walters as the team’s new safeties coach. Mizzou’s Alex Grinch left that post Jan. 14 to become Washington State’s new defensive coordinator.

Walters, 29 years old, helped Memphis finish tied for 13th in the country with 17 interceptions in 2014.

“There’s a number of qualities you look for,” Odom said in December regarding the open position. “I want a guy who fits with this staff. He should be tremendous in player relationships, the technical aspects of coaching the position, and then the experience they have recruiting. We’ve got a criteria on what we’ll use to hire the guy.”

He also coached cornerbacks at North Texas (2013), served as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma (2012) and worked as Arizona’s defensive backs coach (2011), a graduate assistant for the Wildcats (2010) and a student assistant at Colorado (2009).

Walters played safety for the CU Buffaloes, graduating in 2008.

Mizzou has a big void to fill at strong safety, as Braylon Webb, arguably the best member of last year’s secondary, is out of eligibility. Thomas Wilson saw time at the position as a freshman, but could move to nickelback with Tavon Ross, a member of the 2014 class, set to play.

According to the Columbia Tribune, Walters made $176,000 at Memphis last year, while Mizzou paid its safeties coach $251,000.
