Numerous SEC signees will be become factors for their respective teams this fall, but there’s only a handful who could turn heads as Week 1 starters:

1. Martez Ivey, OL, Florida: Jim McElwain didn’t have long to secure his first signing class at Florida, but Ivey was at the top of his target list as soon as he arrived in January. The two had several healthy conversations and the possibility of locking down a starting spot as a freshman intrigued the Apopka, Fla. native. If any of these five has the look of a future lottery pick it’s the fleet-footed Ivey at the tackle position.

2. Byron Cowart, DE, Auburn: The Tigers may not have received the ‘package deal’ that the nation’s top defender has alluded to for weeks, but a signature on the dotted line from this coveted pass rusher is all that was needed along a defensive front in dire of need of sacks. Cowart is the most lethal of 10 defenders Auburn signed on Wednesday, an exemplary talent who fits into Will Muschamp’s scheme on the Plains.

3. Kevin Toliver II, CB, LSU: Considered the top cornerback in this year’s class coming to the SEC, Toliver has the look of a future Patrick Peterson or Morris Claiborne and could start from Day 1 following the recent dismissal of Rashard Robinson and Jalen Collins’ decision to turn pro. Paired alongside Tre’Davious White in the secondary, LSU should flex one of the SEC’s best units in coverage under first-year coordinator Kevin Steele.

4. Terry Godwin, ATH, Georgia: Cornerback? Wide receiver? Special teams star? It doesn’t matter where Mark Richt decides to put Godwin this fall, the kid from Hogansville will make plays as a true freshman for the Bulldogs. He’s a dynamic player with the ball in his hands, one of the reasons programs like Auburn and Alabama were in pursuit until the final hour.

5. Marquavius Lewis, DE, South Carolina: We’ve decided to include one JUCO transfer on the list, a player talented enough to be the Gamecocks’ best player on the defensive side of the football this fall. Returning starters Skai Moore and Bryson Allen-Williams will have something to say about that title, but Lewis will get plenty of work off the edge on a revamped defense in Columbia.
