National Signing Day is arguably the biggest day of the college football offseason, but it’s just as unpredictable as it is exciting. This year was certainly no exception, as the day was filled with twists and turns that kept football fans guessing.

Here are our biggest surprises from National Signing Day:

  • Roquan Smith chose UCLA over Georgia, then backs off decision. Many expected Smith, a native of Montezuma Ga., to sign with the Georgia Bulldogs, but he stunned us all by instead announcing he will head to UCLA during his official announcement press conference. However, as reports surfaced stating UCLA defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was leaving the Bruins to take the same job with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons (no moves have officially been made as of Thursday morning) Smith reopened his recruitment and to include Georgia once again as well as Texas A&M and Michigan.
  • Leo Lewis signed with Mississippi State. The top inside linebacker prospect in the nation was committed to Ole Miss for four months, but decommitted last week while on a visit to LSU. This made it seem as though the Tigers had won Lewis over, and when he arrived to his signing day press conference with only LSU and Mississippi State caps on the table, it only reinforced that guess. However, Lewis opted to sign with Mississippi State, stepping into the place of departing top NFL Draft prospect Benardrick McKinney. Ole Miss was his first choice, and LSU is not only the site of his decommitment, but also the closest of the three schools geographically to his hometown of Brookhaven, Miss. Instead, Lewis is a Bulldog, and his addition is a huge signing for MSU and Dan Mullen.
  • Cordell Broadus signed with UCLA over USC. Broadus, son of famous rapper Snoop Dogg, a devout USC fan who’s not shy to admit it, seemed destined to head to Southern Cal to play for the Trojans. Instead, he surprised us all by signing with USC’s top rival, a team with which it shares a city. Snoop said he would still wear USC underwear under his UCLA gear when watching his son play college ball, but he also donned a UCLA jersey at Broadus’ signing to play the role of supportive father.
