The 365-day recruiting season is in full swing for several SEC programs now that spring practice is over for most. Here’s where each Eastern Division team sits for 2016:

GEORGIA BULLDOGS

Current ranking: No. 6 in 247Sports’ Composite with 10 verbal commits

Top commits

1. Jacob Eason, QB, Five-star
2. Ben Cleveland, OT, Five-star
3. Chauncey Manac, WDE, Four-star

Major targets remaining and outlook: A stable class of incoming talent would increase its overall worth substantially if the Bulldogs could grab the nation’s top-ranked athlete, Demetris Robinson (Savannah, Ga.), who decommitted from Alabama on Friday. He would fill a crucial void at wide receiver on an offense set to welcome five-star quarterback Jacob Eason and cornerstone tackle Ben Cleveland next spring. Georgia is setting up for a Top 5 class if it can land a few more notables, including in-state five-star defensive tackles Derrick Brown (Buford) and Julian Rochester (Powder Springs).

FLORIDA GATORS

Current ranking: No. 20 in 247Sports’ Composite with 8 verbal commits

Top commits

1. Chauncey Gardner, CB, Four-star
2. Spencer Perry, S, Three-star
3. Tyrek Tisdale, APB, Three-star

Major targets remaining: Jim McElwain’s first complete recruiting class at Florida sits inside the Top 25 as it stands with 10 months left in the cycle. He helped salvage the 2015 group by securing five-star tackle Martez Ivey who will likely start as a true freshman when he arrives later this summer. For 2016, the Gators need skill players and they’ve already taken initial necessary steps with a pair of three-star in-state wideouts — Rick Wells and Isaiah Johnson. Florida would like to get its hands on five-star defensive end Shavar Manuel in Bradenton, Fla., considered one of next year’s top players overall. He’s a Florida State lean, but the Gators haven’t given up after receiving an unofficial visit last weekend. It looks like Florida has a great chance at landing four-star guard Parker Boudreaux from Orlando, but Clemson is the early leader with several other SEC programs — including Alabama and Auburn — in the fray.

KENTUCKY WILDCATS

Current ranking: No. 7 in 247Sports’ Composite with 15 verbal commits

Top commits

1. Drake Jackson, C, Four-star
2. Landon Young, OT, Four-star
3. Jordan Griffin, CB, Four-star

Major targets remaining and outlook: The Wildcats have started off fast for 2016 with a league-leading 15 verbal commitments, led by the top-ranked player in Kentucky, center Drake Jackson. Securing the top class in program history is going to be a challenge however, considering most of the Wildcats’ top remaining targets are leaning elsewhere. Kentucky needs athletes on defense and four-stars Prince Sammons (SDE, Cincinnati, Ohio) and John Broussard (CB, Phenix City, Ala.) would provide immediate help. Sammons is a massive 6-foot-8, 280 pounds and could fight for a starting job out of the gate on a depleted front four.

MIZZOU TIGERS

Current ranking: Unranked in 247Sports’ Composite with 0 commits

Major targets remaining and outlook: Historically slow starters, the Tigers are the only team in the SEC without a commit in the 2016 class, but Gary Pinkel has extended offers to several players he thinks fit the Mizzou brand and “process” that’s led to consecutive division titles. Last season, Mizzou only had one commit for 2015 at this junction and finished with the most impressive group in program history, so no one is pressing the panic button in Tiger Town. Pinkel’s moves are precise and calculated on the recruiting trail. Cornerback is a major point of emphasis, since Mizzou will lose a substantial portion of its secondary after this season. The Tigers are hoping to strike gold at Galena Park (Texas) North Shore where they’ve offered two players — five-star safety Eric Monroe and four-star athlete Maciah Long. Mizzou looked to be in the lead for three-star in-state tight end Brendan Scales, but the 6-foot-4, 230-pound target backed off a few weeks ago and committed to Alabama on Friday.

SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS

Current ranking: No. 26 in 247Sports’ Composite with 5 verbal commits

Top commits

1. Kyle Davis, ATH, Four-star
2. C.J. Freeman, RB, Four-star
3. Brandon McIlwain, QB, Four-star

Major targets remaining and outlook: The Gamecocks are hoping the 2016 recruiting season plays out smoother than last season’s nine decommitment debacle that was partially saved during the final few days leading up to National Signing Day. South Carolina feels it landed its quarterback of the future with Brandon McIlwain’s (Newtown, Pa.) commitment on New Year’s Eve, but G.A. Mangus is working hard to make sure he sticks. The Gamecocks are going all-in on top prospect Rashan Gary (Paramus, N.J.), but the nation’s top-ranked defensive tackle is considered a longshot and favors Alabama. Before exhausting all resources on Gary, going after nearby North Carolina and Georgia five-star pass rushers Dexter Lawrence and Julian Rochester seems more feasible. Four-star offensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (Goose Creek, S.C.) remains a top priority and Steve Spurrier Jr. is confident he’s a South Carolina lean.

TENNESSEE VOLS

Current ranking: No. 18 in 247Sports’ Composite with 7 verbal commits

Top commits

1. Devante Brooks, TE, Four-star
2. Marquill Osborne, CB, Four-star
3. Jarrett Guarantano, QB, Four-star

Major targets remaining and outlook: The commitment of four-star quarterback Jarrett Guarantano last week pushed the Vols into the Top 20 nationally and softened the blow of Austin Kendall’s decommitment last month. As of now, Tennessee’s free of five-stars after signing two in the 2015 class, but there’s a couple out there Butch Jones could sway including Georgia Bulldogs target Derrick Brown (Buford, Ga.), a 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive tackle. Four-star safety Nigel Warrior (Suwanee, Ga.) is a hard-hitting ballhawk the Vols have been looking at for since his sophomore season.

VANDERBILT COMMODORES

Current ranking: No. 75 in 247Sports’ Composite with 1 verbal commit

Top commit

1. Austin Quillen, S, Three-star

Major targets remaining and outlook: It appears most prospective athletes are taking a wait-and-see approach with the Commodores heading into Derek Mason’s second campaign to ensure there’s stability at the program before they commit and sign on for the 2016 season. Vanderbilt’s behind the eight ball compared to other programs within its own division in the recruiting race and its’ not getting any easier with Florida — under Jim McElwain — and Kentucky’s recent surge. Mason’s class needs headliner, players who can change a franchise. He’s looking at a pair of four-stars on defense, corner Joejuan Williams (Hendersonville, Tenn.) and linebacker Tre Lamar (Roswell, Ga.). If Mason gets commitments from those two, there’s talent he can build around on his side of the football.
