Tyrell Cameron, a prep football player at Franklin Parish High in Winnsboro, Louisiana, died Friday night following an undisclosed injury sustained during a punt return, according to Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb.

Cameron, a 16-year-old sophomore, tripped during a fourth-quarter return and fell forward into a teammate.

“He kind of stumbled and kind of hit [another player] in the chest area,” said Cameron’s friend Aaron Monnin, according to ABC News. “The bottom part of his face mask got caught in the middle of [the other player’s] pads and pushed his head backwards.”

Motionless on the field after the play, Cameron was taken to Franklin Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
