One of the hottest coaching commodities to come out of college football might find himself in the same situation going back into it.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported Wednesday that San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly may be seeking a return to the college ranks with several high-profile schools likely searching for coaching candidates. LSU already has a head coaching vacancy, while Oregon and Texas seem ready to move on from Mark Helfrich and Charlie Strong, respectively.

La Canfora cited Kelly’s poor roster in San Francisco and the failure of his up-tempo offense in the NFL as reasons for him to abandon the 49ers after just one season. San Francisco is 1-5 under Kelly, who was fired from Philadelphia after compiling a 27-26 record through three years.

Kelly, of course, launched Oregon onto the national stage. The Ducks played in a BCS bowl game in all four of his seasons as coach and lost the national title game in 2010. Oregon went 46-7 under Kelly from 2009-2012.
