For a second consecutive year, inexperience and uncertainty at quarterback is a major theme of the SEC season.

By my count, as many as nine SEC teams could enter the fall with legitimate, ongoing quarterback competitions.

Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State, Missouri and Tennessee are the surest bets at starting quarterback, though Kyle Allen (Texas A&M), Patrick Towles (Kentucky) and Johnny McCrary (Vanderbilt) are likely starters.

Dak Prescott’s career numbers jump out as the best in the SEC, while Joshua Dobbs (as a runner) and Kyle Allen (as a passer) have posted some impressive stats as well, mostly as midseason replacements i 2014.

The most alarming figure in the data below is completion percentage. Half the SEC’s experienced quarterbacks have failed to complete 53 percent of their passes during their college careers. That will have to get much better in 2015, or the SEC may be offensively challenged — at least through the air.
