We’re just 11 days away from another SEC kickoff and most coaches have had two scrimmages to judge position battles entering the final stretch before game week.

Here’s some player news and scrimmage notes from practice over the last few days involving teams in the SEC’s Western Division:

Alabama Crimson Tide

  • Nick Saban said after the scrimmage that neither quarterback has created separation, and that he will name the starter between Jacob Coker and Blake Sims when he’s ready. He added that Sims is playing faster because he’s been in the system longer.
  • No passing stats were provided.
  • RB Tyren Jones led the team with 12 carries for 44 yards and one touchdown.
  • RB Kenyan Drake led the team in receiving with three catches for 77 yards and one touchdown. Amari Cooper caught five passes for 63 yards and one touchdown.
  • The first-team defense stepped up in the final fall scrimmage.
  • LB Trey DePriest led the team with seven tackles. Dillon Lee racked up six tackles and one sack, while Jonathan Allen and Landon Collins both added four tackles.
  • Coach Saban quote: “I do think Blake probably is playing a little faster right now. He’s been in the system longer and has a better understanding, has a little more rhythm.”

Arkansas Razorbacks

  • Brandon Allen led the team in passing, completing 19-28 for 210 yards and three touchdowns, and Bret Bielema added Austin Allen has solidified himself as the backup quarterback. The younger Allen finished 9-20 for 49 yards and one touchdown.
  • Brandon Allen threw touchdown passes of 27 and 11 to Jeremy Sprinkle and Cody Hollister.
  • RB Korliss Marshall stole the show and ended the scrimmage ripping off a 57-yard touchdown. He finished with eight carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
  • RB Jonathan Williams was held out of practice due to a hamstring injury he suffered last week.
  • WR Jeremy Sprinkle led the Hogs with three catches for 91 yards and one touchdown.
  • Freshman WR Jojo Robinson caught three passes for 53 yards, including a beautiful 25-yard pass across the middle from the younger Allen.
  • Defensive end Deatrich Wise and linebacker Brooks Ellis were held out due to injury, and the defense was good against the run.
  • Coach Bielema quote: “I think Austin has declared himself, if there was a situation (and) unless something dramatically changes in the next two week, that he’s our No. 2 quarterback.”

Auburn Tigers

  • Gus Malzahn’s big announcement following the scrimmage was about Star Robenson Therezie. Malzahn said Therezie is working through some eligibility issues to start the season, and his status is currently unknown.
  • The players talked up Nick Marshall’s leadership this season, and they added that he’s more vocal and more a leader.
  • Coach Malzahn quote on Nick Marshall: “Next week, I’ll have a little more clarity for you guys on exactly what our strategy will be.”

LSU Tigers

  • Les Miles said RB Leonard Fournette had a long run on a broken play, but he neglected to say how many yards he ran for on the day.
  • Miles confirmed both quarterbacks played well, but he didn’t reveal any specific stats. He said three touchdowns were thrown, along with one interception.
  • Nine different receivers caught passes. Freshman Trey Quinn caught four to five, and he also said Quinn ran the ball out of the I-formation.
  • WR Malachi Dupre did not play because he’s banged up.
  • DE Danielle Hunter led the defense with nine tackles, four for loss.
  • Miles also mentioned cornerback Rashard Robinson as having a nice scrimmage.
  • Coach Miles quote: “The quarterbacks both played well. There were nine receivers that caught balls.”

Mississippi State

  • MSU scrimmaged Friday night, but media availability was cancelled on Saturday. There should be updates on Sunday.

Ole Miss Rebels

  • Ole Miss didn’t scrimmage over the weekend.

Texas A&M

  • Kevin Sumlin named sophomore Kenny Hill Johnny Manziel’s replacement and starter for game one against South Carolina.
  • Coach Sumlin quote: “The competition was close and that competition will continue to help us improve. I have talked to both quarterbacks as well as the team and we will prepare with Kenny getting the first-team reps.”
