South Carolina’s recruiting class is still ranked in the top-15, according to 247sports, but it’s trending in the wrong direction and tonight’s announcement from a key commit won’t make things any better.

Four-star defensive end Arden Key tweeted out Tuesday night that he was officially withdrawing his commitment from the Gamecocks.

This marks the Gamecocks’ seventh de-commitment since October.

Key was expected to be a big part of South Carolina’s 2015 recruiting class, especially because of his pass rushing skills, an area in which the Gamecocks struggled mightily this season.

Despite committing to the Gamecocks back in June, several SEC schools have ramped up their pursuit of Key in recent weeks. Georgia, LSU and Auburn are expected to be some of the schools vying for Key’s commitment now that he’s no longer a part of South Carolina’s class.

He is scheduled to officially visit LSU on Jan. 16, South Carolina on Jan. 23 and Georgia on Jan. 30. Auburn recently rejoined the fray after the hiring of Will Muschamp as defensive coordinator. It’s unclear whether the Gamecocks are still in the running for Key or if he’ll work in an official visit to Auburn after the dead period, but the Tigers have certainly gained some momentum for the four-star defensive end.

Whatever happens, there’s sure to be a lot of drama surrounding Key’s recruitment in the final weeks leading up to National Signing Day.
