South Carolina thought it had hit the jackpot in July 2011 when four-star receivers Shaq Roland, Kwinton Smith and Jody Fuller all committed to the Gamecocks during the same week as members of an impressive incoming 2012 class.

Three years later, only Roland, a disappointment in his own right, remains.

Fuller left the team in June while Smith, prepping for his redshirt sophomore season, called it quits the following month to pursue an opportunity in baseball.

Smith, who was declared academically ineligible for the Capital One Bowl, caught five passes for 42 yards in his career with the Gamecocks but never cracked the rotation, playing behind pass-catchers like Bruce Ellington and Damiere Byrd. Smith was drafted in the 14th round by the Texas Rangers in 2012 and is attending Florence-Darlington Tech to play baseball.

“At the end of the day, baseball is my first love,” Smith told The State newspaper in July. “I missed being out there on the field. I just went back to where my heart was.”

Smith, considered the fifth-best prospect in South Carolina when he was recruited out of Dillon, had several offers from elite SEC programs including Alabama, Auburn and LSU.

Roland, 2011’s Mr. Football in the Palmetto State, has been as much of an off-the-field headache as he’s been on it for the Gamecocks. He’s been suspended twice for violating team rules since his arrival and had a ‘heart to heart’ with Steve Spurrier — as the Head Ball Coach called it — in October to discuss his future with the program.

The former Parade All-American has the tools to be an elite wide receiver and has proved it with 10 career touchdown receptions, but inconsistency has plagued an up and down career heading into his final season.
