South Carolina’s non-conference game against South Alabama on Saturday will conclude the home careers of 17 seniors who have played an instrumental role in changing the perception of a once mediocre football program during their time in Columbia.

Led by Dylan Thompson, A.J. Cann and Brison Williams, this group’s is responsible for 38 wins, tying for the second-most in school history. They have a chance to be the first class to ever record four consecutive bowl victories, but first, the Gamecocks (5-5) need a sixth win to get there.

“We want to get bowl-eligible,” Thompson said after Wednesday’s practice. “And just have a good time doing it. South Alabama is a good team. We’ve got to come out and play hard, play fast. They play fast and we have to be ready for them. We want to give the home crowd a good show because we haven’t done that the past few times at home.”

South Carolina snapped a four-game SEC losing skid last weekend at Florida, arguably the best win of the season. The Gamecocks trailed 17-10 in the final two minutes before a blocked punt from Carlton Heard led to Mike Davis’ game-tying touchdown.

In overtime, Thompson’s 5-yard keeper for a touchdown following a Gators field goal provided South Carolina with only its second win ever in The Swamp.

The Gamecocks are hoping to parlay some of that momentum into Saturday’s home finale before a rivalry game Thanksgiving Weekend at Clemson. South Carolina’s won five straight in the series and a 7-5 finish could be enough to get the Gamecocks into the SEC’s second-tier bowl games including the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl in Jacksonville or the Music City Bowl in Nashville.

Coach Steve Spurrier said his team isn’t taking South Alabama (6-4) lightly.

“It is always important to get bowl eligible and we are in position, but we haven’t done it yet,” Spurrier said. “We are not good enough to think we can show up and roll over people. We have struggled a lot this year and we have to play our best to give ourselves a chance to win. Hopefully we can come to the ballpark ready to play.”
