Football chaplain Adrian Despres had been involved with the South Carolina program since the turn of the century, but not anymore.

Department spokesman Steve Fink told the Associated Press that South Carolina coach Will Muschamp has cut ties with Despres because the new Gamecocks coach wanted to have “multiple voices” rather than one single person assisting with the spiritual development of players.

Muschamp expressed to the Columbia Rotary Club in March that he wouldn’t be having a team chaplain after giving his take on the spiritual philosophy for the program.

Despres had been with the school from 2000-15. His first year with South Carolina came after its 0-11 season in Lou Holtz’s first year in Columbia.
