South Carolina’s putting the finishing touches on its $14.5 million renovation outside Williams-Brice Stadium and on Friday, one of the project’s most unique features ‘touched down’ on the northwest side.

Commemorating his accomplishments including the program’s only Heisman Trophy, a statue of George Rogers has been mounted on its pedestal and will be ready for gameday when the Gamecocks host Kentucky next weekend to open the home schedule.

An official unveiling of the statue with new Springs Brooks Plaza is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Rogers rushed for 1,781 yards in 1980, beating out Georgia’s Herschel Walker to win the prestigious award. Taken No. 1 in the 1981 draft, Rogers became the first active player in school history to have his number (38) retired.
