Four-star wide receiver Bryan Edwards out of Conway, S.C. has decommitted from the Gamecocks, according to 247Sports recruiting insider Ryan Bartow.

Edwards was considered one of South Carolina’s gems in its 2016 class. His prep coach, Chuck Jordan, told The State newspaper that Edwards will take an official visit to Clemson this week.

“Clemson offered a long time ago and then there was some question about not having anything available, but they’ve come back to tell him they’ve got some things worked out,” Jordan told The State. “It was around the time (Steve) Spurrier resigned. He has informed me he is going to try to do something in December. I think he’d love to get it out of the way. He’s just opening some options up.”

Many have speculated that Edwards’ announcement is tied to South Carolina’s next head coaching hire and him not fitting into a new offense.

During any regime change, decommits and transfers happen. Edwards, who is recovering from a season-ending knee injury, could be the first domino of many that go this route.

He is the third verbal commit to re-open his recruitment since Spurrier’s departure.
