The South Carolina Gamecocks held their first intrasquad scrimmage of the spring on Saturday morning, allowing head coach Steve Spurrier and his staff to assess their team midway through the spring practice season.

The scrimmage was closed to the media and the public, but upon its conclusion Spurrier spoke to the media regarding South Carolina’s ongoing quarterback competition, the development of a second receiver opposite Pharoh Cooper and the improvements made on the defensive side of the ball.

Spurrier indicated that he wanted to get all his quarterbacks at least 10 reps apiece on Saturday, and that three of his quarterbacks each received at least nine reps when all was set and done. To clarify, the quarterbacks Spurrier is referencing at the beginning of the video clip are sophomore Connor Pitch (11 attempts), junior Perry Orth (nine attempts) and redshirt freshman Michael Scarnecchia (12 attempts). Brendan Nosovitch, also in the running for the job, completed his only pass attempt of the day.

Spurrier also noted that his receivers struggled with drops again on Saturday.

“The guys caught some and dropped some, too. Some of these could have been caught also,” Spurrier said.

The Head Ball Coach added that “the defense did some good things here and there” and stated “overall it was pretty good.” Most importantly, he confirmed there were no injuries suffered during the scrimmage, which is always a victory in it of itself at this time of year.
