Not even halfway through spring practice, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has addressed prep school transfer DL Dexter Wideman’s class attendance three times.

The four-star early enrollee represents reinforcement at pass rush, a lack of which crippled the Gamecocks last season. He’s expected to play immediately after spending a single term at Camden Military Academy. But Wideman already is on the verge of a team-levied suspension.

“Dexter Wideman missed (practice) today, and he’s going to miss again tomorrow because he did miss class this time,” Spurrier said, according to The State. “If he misses another one, he’s not going to suit up the first game (in the fall).”

Wideman missed the team’s first day of spring practice as well, as Spurrier explained to the media that he’d missed classes. The Head Ball Coach later clarified that Wideman hadn’t missed class. He’d just been late.

College football programs often monitor whether players attend class and are on track to maintain academic eligibility, in some cases even assigning people to physically monitor whether or not players make it to their seats.

“Dexter needs to get his tail in class,” Spurrier said, according to the paper. “He’s got no excuses this time. I just wanted to get that clear.”

Wideman, listed at 6-foot-4 and 302 pounds by South Carolina, has added nearly 50 pounds since initially signing with the Gamecocks in the spring of 2014. But he didn’t get much playing time with the prep school last fall after dislocating his elbow in the third game.

As badly as SC needs to improve at defensive line, Wideman is not doing himself any favors by missing three of the 15 spring practice sessions and counting. He’s already in the doghouse with Spurrier as well. But something tells me if he doesn’t play Sept. 3 against North Carolina, it won’t be because he again failed to make it to class.
