Here’s some of the highlights from what the Tennessee Volunteers had to say inside — and outside — the main ballroom Monday at the Wynfrey Hotel at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama:

Butch Jones

Opening statement on this season:

“The expectations are a little bit different than what we had it the past, but that’s what we want. That’s why these players came to the University of Tennessee and wanted to be a part of a program that has very high expectations. We still have a number of unproven areas within our football team. We’re going to have to rely on a lot of true freshmen to play important key roles in this season, so a lot of that success will be determined by how quickly they can develop into their roles.

On Oklahoma, schedule:

“We’ve made a commitment to make more neutral site games and some other ones coming down the line as well. Our schedule has been a challenge since Day 1, especially when you play in the SEC. I like that because it prepares you for conference play and you know a little bit more where you’re at with a quality opponent like Oklahoma.”

On Derek Barnett:

“Continue to grow and get quicker off the football. His growth and development may have been set back a little bit in terms of spring practice. the one thing that separates Derek Barnett is his workman like approach. If you tell him you need to do this and this is going to make you successful, he’s going to do it.”

On Shy Tuttle and Kahlil McKenzie:

“They’re gonna need to fit immediately. Defensive tackle is one of those unproven areas on our football team. They’re going to be critical again on the success of our defense. We know you can never have enough defensive tackles (in this conference).”

On domestic violence in college football:

“First of all, there’s absolutely no place for it. Since Day 1 at Tennessee, we’ve worked extensively to have a year-round training program called our personal growth and development program. We have 4th-and-1 Wednesdays. Life is like 4th-and-1 when it comes to decision-making time. We spend an enormous amount of time on it. Can we always do better? Absolutely.”

On the cerebral Josh Dobbs:

“He provides you with great flexibility. The great thing with Josh even more so than opening up the playbook is in corrections. You only have tell him one time. And for him to be able to have the retention of knowledge that it takes is vital.”

Joshua Dobbs, Jr., QB

On Alvin Kamara’s fit into the offense:

“I’ve actually known Alvin since the fifth or sixth grade. We played football and basketball against each other. We’ve known each other for awhile. It’s great to have a familiar face back on campus.”

On the importance of bowl reps as a first-teamer:

“Continuous reps always helps. Before I was even playing, I was utilizing the reps I was getting and treating them as game reps so it would help me once I got my opportunity. Obviously, bowl practice helped. It’s been a great offseason. Since I got on campus, I’ve treated myself as the starting quarterback, but it’s always different when you’re named th estarting quarterback, just how your teammates see you.”

Curt Maggitt, Sr., LB

On Dobbs assuming Tennessee’s No. 1 role on offense:

“Dobbs did a great job on and off the field. He has matured a lot, being a lot more vocal. I told him, ‘I got his back, no matter what’s going on, I got his back.”

On being the Vols being down in the past:

“You’re not used to an SEC team being down that long. My thoughts during the recruiting process when I was being recruited was being a part of bringing it back.”

Cam Sutton, Jr., DB

On the best receiver he’s faced in the SEC:

“It’s got to be Amari Cooper. He does the little things without the ball, making a key block or springing somebody else to score points or get a first down. I’m pretty sure he was a big leader on that team. I’m excited to see what he’s going to do in the NFL.

On Tennessee’s attitude:

“Hungry. That’s the only way you can really explain it. We want more. That’s our mentality. We had a great offseason, you know, spring ball. With the addition of the guys coming in the summer time, we’re eager to learn, always in the film room.”
