Vanderbilt quarterback Patton Robinette is questionable for the team’s noon matchup at Kentucky this Saturday, according to head coach Derek Mason. Mason commented on his starting quarterback’s condition during his weekly press conference Tuesday.

“As of right now, he’s still questionable,” Mason said. “So we’ll get a chance to see more as the week progresses and where we’re at and where we’ll go [at the quarterback position].

Robinette suffered a concussion in the first quarter of Vanderbilt’s 48-34 loss to No. 13 South Carolina on Saturday. The sophomore landed on his head just before capping off a successful touchdown drive with an 8-yard pass to C.J. Duncan to give the Commodores a 14-0 lead. Robinette would leave the field after the drive to be evaluated and missed the remainder of the contest.

Mason noted that he wants Robinette to play in Saturday’s game if he is “at 100 percent,” as determined by team doctors.

“You have to always err on making sure your guy is ready to go,” Mason said. “Nowadays, with what that position means to you, you need a guy, especially playing in the SEC, that can play at 100 percent. Playing at 85 percent just isn’t good enough, and really when you are talking about concussions you need to be fully passed with something like that.”

Mason said freshman Wade Freebeck will make his second career start Saturday if Robinette is unable to participate. Freebeck has made three appearances for Vanderbilt and finished Saturday’s game in Robinette’s absence. He currently has 171 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions on 12-of-22 passing.

On Monday night during his radio call-in show, Mason said he hopes to have a “definite idea” on his starting quarterback’s status by Wednesday, at the latest.
