Head coaches always have to watch what they say to the media because that they say could get them into trouble. For UMass head coach Mark Whipple, it means a weeklong suspension following his recent postgame press conference comments.

After the Minutemen lost to Ohio 58-42 Saturday, Whipple was talking about the officiating during the game when he said, “We had a chance there with 16 down and they rape us, and he picks up the flag.”

The insensitive word choice has landed Whipple in hot water among university officials. UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford made the decision to suspend Whipple without pay for the next week including the team’s next game against South Florida. Whipple will also have mandatory sensitivity training.

Whipple apologized for his word choice while Bamford called it “highly inappropriate” in statements released by the university.

Defensive coordinator Ed Pinkham will replace Whipple as head coach for the game against South Florida next week. The program’s loss to Ohio Saturday moved them to 2-4 on the season.
