On Thursday, a report surface claiming recently fired Maryland coach D.J. Durkin has been involved with Alabama’s coaching staff in a “consultant-like capacity” this week.

While the nature of Durkin’s role with the program was originally unclear, ESPN provided a bit of clarity to the situation with a Friday report indicating he has been meeting with the Crimson Tide’s defensive staff and analyzing film.

The report also stated that Alabama has not hired Durkin for any specific role and that he’s only “offering input” ahead of the team’s Orange Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal game against Oklahoma. In addition to his involvement with the Crimson Tide, Durkin has served in similar roles for several NFL teams, according to ESPN.

Alabama and coach Nick Saban caught a ton of flack both on social media and from pundits for working with Durkin, who was fired from Maryland on Oct. 31 amid much controversy. The coach spent almost three months on administrative leave while his program was investigated following the death of a player, and he was originally reinstated and cleared of responsibility for many of the issues surrounding the program before public backlash prompted his dismissal.

Saban has brought in several former head coaches, including a few with troubled pasts, over the last few seasons. It doesn’t look like Durkin will be around for long, though.
