Many signs are pointing toward Ole Miss making a hire for its next head coach, but the latest from the official Twitter account of the football team is certainly a unique development.

This was a nod to the papal conclave where dark smoke is known to indicate that the ballot did not result in a consensus choice, while white smoke, which Ole Miss displayed here, announces that a new pope was chosen.

A hot name during this coaching carousel season, Florida Atlantic Kiffin was reportedly mentioned for open jobs at Arkansas and Ole Miss. But recent reports indicate he’s headed to Oxford.

Kiffin has said he has deflection the talk of him being mentioned for these jobs, and did not discuss it with his team. That appeared to ring true as the Owls took a 35-6 lead over UAB by halftime of the Conference USA championship game.

Overall, Kiffin’s compiled a 25-13 overall record, including 18-6 in conference. After a 11-3 mark two years ago, the Owls slipped to 5-7 last year. This year, they’re 9-3. The Owls hired him after their 2016 season, after one year at Tennessee and three and a half years at Southern Cal.

Ole Miss is hoping he can duplicate some of the success he’s seen at several of these stops.
