OFFENSE: F

Missouri mustered 147 yards of offense, turned the ball over five times and got shut out for the first time in 147 games. The offensive line couldn’t pass protect. Maty Mauk threw into coverage (or straight to it), bailed from the pocket early and missed open receivers. The receivers dropped passes and couldn’t get open. Marcus Murphy had nine touches for 50 yards and probably was the offensive MVP. This is the first failing grade I’ve given out all year. Missouri earned it.

DEFENSE: C+

The unit played well in the first quarter, holding Georgia to two field goals despite awful field position stemming from two Mauk interceptions. Nick Chubb finished the game averaging 3.8 yards per carry, which is a pretty solid effort, all things considered. Hutson Mason completed better than 75 percent of his passes, but for just 5.6 yards per attempt. The Bulldogs took Missouri’s pass rush out of play with methodical execution of short gainers. The Tigers failed to force a turnover for the third consecutive game after losing the nation’s longest turnover streak against Indiana. The defense would get a higher grade if Georgia didn’t put up 34 points.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B-

The team gave up more punt return yards (42) than it has all season. Murphy did little on five combined returns. There weren’t many big plays on special teams in this game.

COACHING: C-

Missouri’s offensive line has regressed the last three games, and the young receivers didn’t do enough despite a slight improvement. Mauk looked like one of the better quarterbacks in the country the first three games. Now he may not be a top-half quarterback in the SEC. For a coaching staff that’s supposedly one of the best in the nation at developing players, that won’t cut it. That said, the team lost so much talent from last year’s roster, so to some extent the Tigers are merely playing to realistic expectations.

OVERALL: D+

Missouri had a bye week to prepare for a diminished Georgia offense and a struggling Bulldogs defense. This was a huge SEC East game. The Tigers were fortunate to win at South Carolina two weeks ago. This team will be a road underdog against Florida and Texas A&M and can’t assume wins against Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas. A mediocre bowl game awaits.
