Alabama loses 4-star LB prospect via flip to Big Ten program
Alabama’s recent loss from the 2025 recruiting class is a big gain for Matt Rhule’s Nebraska program.
On Thursday, elite linebacker prospect Dawson Merritt confirmed he is flipping his commitment away from Alabama to commit to the Cornhuskers. Merritt generated major interest from many top programs during his recruitment and originally committed to Kalen DeBoer’s Crimson Tide in June.
Now, he’s on his way to Lincoln as a major piece for Nebraska:

At the time of his flip, Merritt was a top-10 prospect in Alabama’s 2025 recruiting class. He immediately becomes the highest-ranked prospect in Nebraska’s 2025 recruiting class and bumps the Huskers to No. 20 nationally per the 247 Sports Team Composite.
Listed at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds out of Kansas, Merritt is the 13th overall linebacker in the country per the 247 Sports Composite. He’s also the 116th overall recruit in the country.
Alabama is still aiming to land a top-5 recruiting class without Merritt while the linebacker gives Nebraska a great shot at finalizing a top-20 recruiting class in the cycle.
I told you so. PAC 12 Alabama will not survive in the SEC. Alabama has fallen. Tennessee is ascendant.
#1 This isn’t a surprise since his dad coaches for KC Chiefs and wanted him in Nebraska to begin with
#2 Alabama is down THIS year and still in the playoff mix.
#3 UT needed a bs personal foul to survive Bama and this is your best shot
#4 The new dough boy at UT is STILL an underdog at a clearly down UGA this year by 9. UGA by 14
PAC 12 Alabama will not survive in the SEC. Tennessee has already flipped one of your 4*s. Alabama is on its way back down to it’s historical and rightful place in the SEC. Tennessee, Nebraska and others are picking off your NFL talent one by one. This isn’t a one year off. This is the trending reality of the SEC. Tennessee is ascendant.
Even with that Bama is still ahead of your Vils. Long way to December and many NiL offers to be made. Not to mention free agency after the season.
Nebraska is a lot closer to home than Alabama, I’m sure that played a part in his decision.
Georgia will end up with the #1 recruiting class.
Don’t bet on it.
