Alabama wide receiver Malik Benson entered the transfer portal on Wednesday. The former No. 1 JUCO prospect in the Class of 2023 out of Hutchinson Community College in Lansing, Kansas. will look to catch on elsewhere.
Benson caught 13 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in 2023, highlighted by a 3 catch, 23-yard, 1 touchdown performance against Chattanooga and a 33-yard catch for a first down against Auburn. He did not appear in the Tide’s games against Georgia or Michigan.
The speedy wideout landed on the NJCAA DI All-American First Team as a true freshman in 2021, catching 43 passes for a whopping 1,229 yards (~28.5 YPC) and 11 touchdowns. He followed that up with 923 receiving yards and 10 more scores in ’22, allowing him to claim the Hutchinson C.C. record for career receiving yards at 2,152.
Benson originally chose Alabama over the likes of LSU, Oregon, Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn, Florida and Florida State. His top-notch speed combined with a 6-foot-1 frame makes him a physically gifted receiver, and he could be a game-changer for a program that is searching for a bona fide playmaker.
