Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick won the Jim Thorpe Award on Thursday night as the nation’s top DB.

ESPN held its annual College Football Awards Show to showcase the best players across the country, and it didn’t take long for Fitzpatrick’s name to come up.

Fitzpatrick is the second Alabama player to win the award, and the first in the Nick Saban era, according to a report from AL.com.

“I didn’t know what to say when I was up on stage,” Fitzpatrick reportedly said. “I tried not to smile too hard the whole time.”

He also deflected a question about whether he might declare early for the NFL Draft.

“I’m not making any comments about that,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’m worried about winning the national championship.”

Fitzpatrick had 52 total tackles this season for the Crimson Tide — 33 of which were solo stops. He only had one interception this year, but that’s because teams rarely were brave enough to throw the ball near him.

Additionally, Fitzpatrick broke up seven passes this season.
