Brandon Miller facing wrongful death lawsuit connected to January shooting
Brandon Miller is facing a wrongful death lawsuit connected to a fatal shooting that overshadowed the second half of this past college basketball season.
The family of a woman killed in a shooting on the Tuscaloosa strip near the University of Alabama campus has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against 3 men, including Miller, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, ESPN reported.
The other 2 men named in the complaint are former Alabama player Darius Miles and Michael Davis, who are facing capital murder charges in the shooting death of Jamea Jonae Harris, 23, on Jan. 15. Miller was not charged with a crime.
The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama Western Division and demands a jury trial to award damages. The plaintiff, Decarla Raietta Heard, is Harris’ mother and the representative of her estate.
Miller has dealt with legal issues since police said he delivered a gun ahead of a fatal shooting in mid-January.
In his first comments since his name was mentioned in court, Miller responded about the situation after Miller’s interactions with Miles the night of Harris’ murder in January.
“I never lose sight of the fact that a family has lost one of their loved ones that night,” Miller said. “This whole situation is just really heartbreaking. Respectfully, that’s all I’m going to be able to say on that.”
Miller was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets and signed a contract in July worth $49 million over 4 years. He will make $11 million in the first year of the contract.
