The final completion date for Atlanta’s new Mercedes-Benz Stadium has been somewhat up in the air this spring, but Falcons’ CEO Rich McKay reiterated Thursday that it will be ready ahead of the Alabama vs. Florida State game.

And while McKay didn’t address the game directly, he said the stadium is on track to be completed by August 26, ahead of the Falcons’ preseason game against the Cardinals. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff featuring Alabama and Florida State is scheduled for September 2, and everything looks to be on track and ready to go construction-wise.

“We’ll be ready to go Aug. 26th,” McKay said on Pro Football Talk Live on NBC Sports Radio, via AJC.com. “The building is in a good place. We’re in the final stretches. With the roof steel complete, now we know we’ll be ready to go.”

The completion date had been pushed back from July 30 to August 26 due to steel-related work on the roof.

In an interesting move last month, Gary Stokan, president and CEO of Peach Bowl Inc., announced that the retractable roof will be closed (for Alabama vs. FSU and Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech) because he’s taking the weather variable off the table.

“I know when it’s closed, everything is going to go well,” Stokan said. “The air conditioning will be fine. … I think whenever you put on an event the less things you need to be concerned about, the better. And I know with the roof closed it’ll be a great atmosphere and experience.

“If I keep it closed, the weather doesn’t matter. I know I’ve got 72 degrees. I think you want to control the elements as much as you can, obviously, not only for the fans but for the coaches and the players.”

As an insurance policy, the old Georgia Dome still hasn’t been demolished, but it looks like stadium completion should happen before Alabama and Florida State kicks off, making it a non-issue.
