Greg Byrne shared an important update on Alabama’s search for a head coach on Friday afternoon.

Reports have been circulating throughout the day that Alabama is set to hire Washington’s Kalen DeBoer as its next head coach. Byrne more-or-less confirmed those reports shortly after 6 p.m. ET on Friday, indicating that DeBoer is on his way to Tuscaloosa.

Byrne used a photo of white smoke emerging from Archibald’s BBQ to signify the end of the coaching search. Here’s the message Byrne shared on social media:

DeBoer is set to become the 28th head coach in Alabama football history. He’ll be tasked with replacing Nick Saban, who retired earlier this week after 17 seasons at the helm.

From the very beginning of the search, DeBoer was amongst the top names linked to the head job in Tuscaloosa. DeBoer is 104-12 in his head coaching career across stints at Sioux Falls, Fresno State and Washington. Most recently, he led the Huskies all the way to the national championship game. He went 25-3 in 2 seasons as Washington’s head coach.

An official announcement regarding DeBoer’s hiring is expected soon.
