In 2016, Jalen Hurts accomplished something that no other true freshman quarterback had ever managed: Lead his team to a victory in the SEC championship game.

Despite that unrivaled success early on, many believe Hurts needs to improve as a passer to fully realize his game-changing potential.

Alabama held its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday, and Hurts’ performance was exactly what fans wanted to see. According to his head coach, Hurts helped produce plenty of points and limited his mistakes.

“He did a good job,” Saban told reporters when asked about Hurts’ afternoon. “He completed over 50 percent of his passes, and I think he had four touchdown passes. So, I thought he did a good job. I don’t think we threw any interceptions today, so that was good. I think he has a good understanding of what we’re doing, did a much better job in the pocket and did a really good job with play-action passes.”

While improvements in the pocket will help complement his incredible mobility, it’s not as though Hurts was a liability for Alabama’s offense. His 62.8 completion percentage was third among qualified SEC passers, and Hurts’ quarterback rating of 139.12 was fifth-best in the conference.

Of course, those are the numbers of a true freshman and it’s only reasonable to assume he will improve with experience. If Saturday is any indication, Alabama’s offense will be even harder to stop than the one that averaged nearly 40 points last year, and that’s saying something.

“I thought the transition on offense was pretty smooth with the things we were doing, the carryover of things we’ve done from the past as well as the new things that we did,” Saban said after the scrimmage. “I thought we were much more effective passing the football today. A lot of big plays, a lot of explosive plays throwing the ball, especially play-action passes. I think all the quarterbacks did a fairly good job and they all got a good opportunity.”

Fans will have the opportunity to watch Hurts and the rest of his teammates in person at Alabama’s A-Day Game, which will take place on Saturday, April 22 at 3 p.m. ET.
