Jay Bilas was recently asked about the ongoing situation at Alabama involving Brandon Miller and new details that came to light regarding the fatal shooting of Jamea Harris in January.

Those new details and Nate Oats’ response have received a firestorm of criticism from across the country. However, Bilas actually had a positive reaction to how things have transpired at Tuscaloosa.

During an appearance on ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption,” Bilas was asked if Alabama will have second thoughts about playing Brandon Miller through the remainder of the season.

“I don’t believe so, Tony and Michael, and I think Alabama has handled this about as well as you can with the exception of Nate Oats in his press conference where he should have just said ‘This is a pending legal matter. Alabama and Brandon Miller have cooperated fully with authorities and will continue to do so, but beyond that, we will have no further comment,'” explained Bilas. “That’s what he should have said and that should be the answer to all of these questions.

“Brandon Miller has rights. The authorities have told Alabama he’s a witness, not a suspect. There’s no indication that he has violated any law. They know him better than we do, and if they didn’t take action 5 weeks ago or so when this horrible tragedy happened, I don’t see any reason to do it now. Now, if something else comes out I understand it, but to me, if he were held out of competition now that would be Alabama saying ‘Our reputation as a university and what people say about us is more important than our player.’ I think they’ve balanced the player and the university and those interests pretty well overall.”

Regardless of perception, it does not appear Alabama will be sitting Miller, barring any new information coming to light. He played Wednesday and delivered 41 points as Alabama avoided an upset loss to South Carolina.

The Crimson Tide next play at home Saturday against Arkansas. That game is scheduled for 2 pm ET on ESPN2.
