Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama team suffered one of the most shocking losses in program history in Week 6. The previously top ranked Crimson Tide fell in Nashville to Vanderbilt, 40-35.

After a loss like that, it would be easy to imagine players being discouraged. However, the opposite has happened, according to DeBoer. On Thursday’s edition of “Hey Coach,” DeBoer praised his players’ response to the loss.

“The sun came up and we went to work. Sunday, we talk about that being a day where we’ve got to get down to the truths. And that’s win or lose,” said DeBoer.”I’ve been extremely proud of the way the guys came with that mindset, came with that attitude. They handled it great on Sunday. Tuesday and Wednesday practices have been full of energy, guys just focused on getting better.”

DeBoer’s team will need to have a short memory as games against South Carolina and Tennessee are next on the docket.

The coach was also asked about the preparation for Vanderbilt, and DeBoer thinks his staff’s plan was adequate.

“I felt like we had a good plan. We had a plan within the plan (for) when they attack you a different way. … I thought our staff did a nice job,” said the coach.

The Tide had stretches where things went their way against Vanderbilt, but the team could never sustain the momentum. Alabama trailed at the end of every quarter in the game.

“There were things that when those big moments came, they just out-executed and made a play,” DeBoer said. “… We got to a point where we fell behind and had to be perfect and we weren’t able to be perfect down the road in the latter part of the third quarter, fourth quarter. Came up just short.”

Alabama was outgained, lost the turnover battle, and had more penalties than Vanderbilt. As DeBoer mentioned, that’s not a winning formula in the SEC.

The Tide will look to get back on track in Week 7 against South Carolina.
