The Cardinals are doing what they can to keep Kenyan Drake for the 2020 season.

Arizona announced on Monday that the pending free agent running back has been given the transition tag by the franchise with NFL free agency set to begin on Wednesday. Drake was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.

If you aren’t familiar with the “transition tag” term, Drake is still allowed to negotiate with all the other NFL teams, however, Arizona has the right to match any offer extended to the running back by another NFL team. If Arizona refuses to match an offer extended to Drake, he would then be free to leave the club and accept the original offer.

While this move doesn’t lock Drake into staying in Arizona, if the two sides cannot agree to a long-term deal, the former Alabama running back’s salary in 2020 will be decided by taking an average of the top 10 running back salary in the league — which projects to just under $8.5 million for one season.

That’s not a bad salary for any player and especially not a running back in today’s modern NFL.

Drake rushed for 643 yards and eight touchdowns last season in Arizona after being traded by the Miami Dolphins. The Cardinals gave up a 5th round draft pick to land Drake.
