Even after a 51-14 blowout of Louisville at the hands of Alabama, questions about how Saban handled his quarterbacks remain.

Tua Tagovailoa got the start, but only played four series before Jalen Hurts was inserted into the game. Tagovailoa led the Crimson Tide to three touchdowns on those first four drives and finished the game with 227 yards and two touchdowns while Hurts was less impressive, throwing for just 70 yards and no touchdowns.

On Monday morning during an appearance on ESPNU radio, former Alabama quarterback and college football analyst Greg McElroy went off on Saban’s decision to continue to give Hurts reps.

“What’s even more ridiculous is by pretending that this quarterback competition continues to exist,” said McElroy. “It’s over! Like, quit trying to act like Jalen—’Well I like both guys,’ I’m sure you do. Tua is your starting quarterback, and the reason why he’s (Saban) reacting that way is because he knows it.”

McElroy went a little further, claiming that Saban could lose the team if he continues to give Hurts reps.

“Jalen does not give this team the best chance to win, and if you’re gonna replace players who aren’t as good as the guy they are getting replaced by at every other position, how can you not do it at quarterback?” said McElroy.

“(Saban) continues to have to try to defend his decision to play both and that’s fine, but you’re trying to hide reality. Eventually, that team is going to say ‘why is Jalen going in, if I was playing like Jalen was and my backup was playing the way Tua is, I can assure you I wouldn’t be playing,’ and you lose the team. You run the risk of losing the team. I just don’t understand why he continues to fight it.”
