Montana Fouts had the perfect birthday present Friday night.

The No. 3 seed Alabama Crimson Tide’s star pitcher threw the first perfect game in 21 years — the 5th pitcher in history to do it — at the Women’s College World Series. The Tide thumped No. 2 seed UCLA 6-0 behind Fouts’ epic performance. Previously, Alabama was 0-10 all-time against the Bruins.

In front of a record crowd, the junior Fouts struck out 14 — 9 of the first 12 batters she faced — to propel Alabama’s 20th straight win.

Alabama’s Kaylee Tow broke the game wide open in the 5th inning with a 3-run bomb. That was all Fouts needed.

In 2 WCWS games, Fouts has struck out 30 of the 43 batters she’s faced and allowed just 2 hits in 14 innings. The best part about Fouts is that she’s getting better as the season progresses.

“Just to watch greatness is pretty cool,” Alabama softball head coach Patrick Murphy said. “All of you were a witness to it. So, didn’t think she would get better from yesterday, but she did. And these are, obviously you guys know, these are good teams. I mean, this is the king of the Pac-12, the Pac-12 Champions, and to throw a perfect game against legendary UCLA is something else for a kid from a small town from northeast Kentucky. So just an unbelievable feeling.”

Alabama will return to the field Sunday as it continues its quest for a national title.
