Nick Saban announced Friday night during his press conference that Alabama has hired Pete Golding as an assistant coach.

Saban said that Golding would technically be the 10th assistant on the staff, but that he couldn’t coach on the field until January 9.

“We are pleased to have Pete and his family join our staff at Alabama,” Saban said in a release. “Pete is an exciting young coach, who has an outstanding reputation as both a teacher and recruiter. He will be a great fit in our organization with his knowledge of the game and his ability to relate to student-athletes. We are thrilled to welcome Pete and his family to Alabama.”

Golding comes to Alabama from UTSA, where he was the defensive coordinator and coached the defensive backs. Presumably, he’ll fit in for Jeremy Pruitt after he officially leaves for Tennessee. Pruitt is the Tide’s defensive coordinator and will coach through the College Football Playoff before heading to Knoxville full time. Saban indicated that he would address the rest of the staff issues later after the Tide’s Playoff games are over.

Per his UTSA profile, Golding has coached six All-Americans during his 10-year coaching career. He’s one of the up-and-coming defensive coaches and minds in college football, and he’ll be another great addition to the Tide’s staff.

A source told SDS that Golding was most likely heading to join Ole Miss’ staff before Saban called.
