Nick Saban still isn’t ready to name a starting quarterback for the 2023 season.

Saban addressed Alabama’s competition while on the main stage at SEC Media Days in Nashville on Wednesday. He said none of the 3 quarterbacks — Ty Simpson, Jalen Milroe or Tyler Buchner — have separated themselves at this point in the competition.

He also told reporters that he’s not in any hurry to make a final decision.

Buchner transferred in from Notre Dame earlier this offseason. He won the starting job in South Bend out of fall camp in 2022, but suffered a serious shoulder injury in Week 2. He didn’t play for the Fighting Irish again until their bowl game.

Buchner is also the most familiar with new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who coached him with Notre Dame over the past couple seasons.

Simpson made his debut last season but played sparingly in limited action behind Bryce Young and Milroe. He completed 4-of-5 passes for 35 yards. Simpson was a 5-star recruit in the class of 2022.

Milroe was Alabama’s primary backup last season, but he was responsible for 5 turnovers and completed just 58.5% of his passes while averaging 5.6 yards per attempt.

Alabama opens the regular season against Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Sept. 2.
