Alabama beat out Georgia and Florida for five-star running back Trey Sanders in the 2019 recruiting cycle as the IMG Academy product pledged his services to the Crimson Tide live on national television and boldly claimed he would win a Heisman Trophy his freshman season in Tuscaloosa.

Now that he’s on the roster and participating in his first training camp with the Tide, Nick Saban has liked what he has seen from Sanders thus far. However, the Heisman talk will have to be put on hold for now, as the Alabama coach was quick to praise his freshman running back, while at the same time downplay that any player has earned anything so early into camp.

“Trey Sanders is doing really, really well in camp. His work ethic is really good, he’s learning every day,” Saban said on Wednesday. “You know, his attention to detail seems to be pretty good. He’s got some ability that I think may be able to contribute to the team.”

All of that has to sound great to Alabama fans, but they had to know a “but” was coming from Saban. He’s not one to anoint any player, particularly a true freshman one week into camp.

“But, again, you know after five practices in one day and pads, we’re not ready to post a starting lineup, we’re not ready to post roles for everybody on the team,” Saban continued. “I think right now everybody’s focus should be: What do I need to do to improve on? What can I do right now today, to improve? So I can have more success as a player I can create more value for myself and I can go earn it. In terms of what we want to try to accomplish personally and together as a team.”

It’s safe to say Sanders is living up to the hype a week into camp but the grind that is to come in the coming weeks could change the story in a hurry.
