After serving as Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator for three seasons, Lane Kiffin apparently came away from the experience thinking there has to be a better way. Admittedly not a big fan of all the verbal lashes he received from the Alabama head coach, Kiffin will be utilizing another strategy at his next job.

Now employed as the head coach at FAU, Kiffin will likely use much of the information he gained from working under Saban. However, one practice that Kiffin apparently won’t be taking with him to Boca Raton is public heated confrontations with his assistants.

During his Wednesday appearance on Sirius XM College radio, Kiffin appeared to take a small shot at the way Saban conducts his business in Tuscaloosa.

This conversation comes a day after former Alabama standout defensive end Jonathan Allen noted some of his fondest memories at the school revolve around Saban tearing into Kiffin during practice.

“Oh easily watching Saban crush Kiffin,” Allen said while on a recent ESPN episode of Russillo & Kanell. “At practice… it was our goal to see how many times we could get Coach Saban to MF Kiffin. I mean that was our goal.”

While Kiffin likely learned much from his time working under Saban, it’s important to note he also spent several seasons working for Pete Carroll during the recent heyday of USC football. It would be tough to come up with two highly successfully coaches that are on diametrically opposite sides of the demeanor scale than Carroll and Saban. What worked for one, isn’t necessarily going to work for the other.

If Kiffin can somehow find a way to blend the two together and sprinkle in his mastery of play calling and quarterback development into his own program, he very well could be an elite head coach sooner rather than later.
