According to a report from Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the New England Patriots have released former Alabama cornerback Cyrus Jones.

The former second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft has struggled in coverage over the past few seasons, and hasn’t been all that impressive in the return game either. He fumbled five times during his rookie season and was on the bubble to make the roster last year before he tore his ACL in the preseason.

According to 247Sports, Jones was fighting to stay on roster as a returner, but because of his competition in former Vol Cordarrelle Patterson, Bill Belichick was forced to let Jones go.

Patterson is one of the most electric kick returners in the NFL, and Jones didn’t stand much of a chance against the veteran.

Jones recorded just seven tackles in 10 games during his rookie season in 2016.
