Report: Details of Steve Sarkisian's contract at Texas released
Even though Alabama OC Steve Sarkisian was one of the highest-paid coordinators in the country in 2020, he’ll still be getting a hefty raise when he takes over as the head coach at Texas.
No, he won’t be making the $6 million Tom Herman made in 2020, but he’ll be paid very competitively as he tries to lead the Longhorns back to the top of the Big 12.
Per 247Sports, Sarkisian’s contract with Texas is worth $34.2 million over 6 years:
The University of Texas and Sarkisian have agreed on a six-year, $34.2 million contract, per Horns247 insider Chip Brown with a starting salary of $5.2 million for 2021 with $200,000 increases every year thereafter.
Sarkisian will coach the Crimson Tide on Monday for the College Football Playoff title game against Ohio State. Then, he’ll be off to Austin to get to work on his first year with the Longhorns.
More importantly, how much will Texas owe him when the fire him in 2 to 3 years?
I would not bet against him right now. Texas can still draw a lot of talent and top assistants. Sark can coach.
They can, but the problem at Texas is that it has the most-meddlesome boosters in college football. From the big oil barons to the politicians right in Austin, there are constant power struggles over control of the program and the coach often is just a pawn in them. If Finebaum is correct, Saban got a taste of that several years ago when the thinking was Mac Brown was going to retire and Saban was being courted by a powerful booster there to take over after being assured that Brown was stepping down. When Brown instead announced he wasn’t going anywhere, Saban quickly distanced himself from the whole thing as Brown is a close friend of his. Sark is stepping into a (long)hornets’ nest; hope he has plenty of cans of Raid.
^^^ This. I’m a UT (Texas) alum. And trust me… we know where the problem lies. We’re the Dallas Cowboys of CFB and we don’t have one Jerry Jones- we have 9 plus all of the boosters. You should hear the way they speak. Totally out of touch with the fanbase and CFB. It’s a shame and the whole fanbase hates it. Unless Sark pulls a miracle, he won’t make it out alive. I think he has a chance. But the type of personality it takes to win here is one who puts the boosters in their place. That’s why I believe only a Saban or Meyer type of coach can win here. Someone whom the boosters look up to rather than control. Mack was a politician. He knew how to make everyone happy. That’s why he was so successful here. And these boosters… as smart as they are… for some reason haven’t realized that after 10 years of sucking, still don’t have the humility to point the finger at themselves. What’s the common denominator over the past 10 years? Coach? No. Staff? No. Players? No. AD? No. Boosters? Yes. They’re the dumbest smart people in the room.
Well said. Due to family ties, I’m a secondary Longhorn fan and that’s the jest of what I always hear.
Asmathicgirilla. Texas sounds like Tennessee on steroids.
The strange aspect of Sark’s hiring is that as a head coach, his record was not really that good. Plus every former head coach that worked at Alabama is not destined to be good head coach. Note: Jeremy Pruitt.
no bad money if you can get it
