Rolando McClain’s return to the NFL has hit an obstacle.

Pro Football Talk reported that the former Alabama linebacker is set to be released by the Dallas Cowboys, and as a free agent, he could sign with any team. McClain, 30, was just reinstated to the NFL in the last week after he missed the last three seasons after he failed drug tests. He had hip surgery in 2016.

McClain’s reinstatement is conditional, meaning he has to meet the requirements and mandates of the substance-abuse policy. This news isn’t ideal for McClain as teams have already cut their rosters to 53 players, and the regular season kicks off in less than a week.

McClain played for the Oakland Raiders from 2010-12 after they selected him with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2010 draft. He signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, but he retired and sat out that season. He then returned to play for the Dallas Cowboys from 2014-15.

McClain told AL.com in July that he’s motivated to change his story. McClain returned to school and graduated from Alabama in December 2017, has been living in Alabama and has been going through regular workouts, including early morning sessions in the Alabama weight room.

“I’m nowhere near satisfied with how my professional career has gone,” McClain said. “That’s for myself. That’s me looking in the mirror and talking to my boys. Nah, that’s not the taste I want to leave in my mouth.”
