Alabama needed a second quarterback in the first quarter of Saturday’s game at LSU, but it wasn’t Jalen Hurts, and a glimpse of him in pregame warmups may have revealed why he wasn’t ready.

The backup quarterback, who had surgery on his injured right ankle last week, was still limited after he arrived at Tiger Stadium wearing a walking boot. A video captured by CBS showed Hurts moving gingerly on the foot on the field before the game.

Starting QB Tua Tagovailoa has started every game for the Crimson Tide this season, but Hurts has also played in every game. Hurts has passed for 589 yards and five touchdowns in limited action.

While it may have been minor surgery during the bye week, it was still expected to be an impressive recovery turnaround if Hurts could play in this game. Third-string QB Mac Jones got in briefly while Tagovailoa was injured early in the first quarter, and missed just one play.
