While coaching turnover was inevitable in Fayetteville following the dismissal of Chad Morris and the hiring of Sam Pittman, at least one assistant coach will be kept on by the new head Hog.

According to FootballScoop, Pittman has retained Arkansas receivers coach Justin Stepp. Stepp, a longtime Morris assistant, came to Fayetteville from SMU with his former boss two offseasons ago. Before coaching at SMU, Stepp coached with Appalachian State.

In addition to having a reputation as a solid receivers coach, Stepp was arguably the best recruiter on last year’s staff in Fayetteville. The assistant was key in getting Treylon Burks, Trey Knox, Shamar Nash and T.Q. Jackson to Arkansas in the 2019 recruiting class and helped both those players develop and perform during their first seasons on the field.

Under Stepp’s coaching, Burks was named to the 2019 All-SEC Freshman Team on Thursday. Stepp was also honored as one of the nation’s top 25 recruiters by Rivals during the previous offseason. He was also named a finalist for the 2017 FootballScoop Wide Receivers Coach of the Year award.

During his time at SMU, Stepp coached two of the best receivers in that program’s history in Courtland Sutton and Trey Quinn.
