Michael Scherer has made a decision that’s been about 3 weeks in the making.

The Arkansas linebackers’ coach, a 29-year old former Mizzou star linebacker who played and coached for Barry Odom, is expected to get a coordinator role at UNLV. The report was first raised by Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports and The Athletic, and on Sunday also confirmed by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Scherer was the defensive play-caller for Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl and worked the game from the sideline. It was an up and down performance as the Razorbacks allowed 544 passing yards and 603 total yards in a 55-53 triple-overtime win over the Jayhawks. The Hogs also made 3 takeaways and 3 sacks to set a single-season school record with 42 sacks on the year.

Scherer was in his second season as Arkansas’ linebackers coach after his promotion from defensive analyst before the 2020 season.

Scherer and Arkansas linebackers Grant Morgan and Bumper Pool starred in recent seasons. Scherer’s linebackers fueled a defensive improvement that allowed 84 yards less in 2021 than 2020, including 39 fewer yards per game rushing.

Scherer played linebacker at Mizzou from 2012-16, and made 266 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, with a sack and one interception, as he appeared in 38 games over his four-year career.
