The list continues to grow for possible candidates at Auburn, but the Tigers are reportedly still looking for their coach as another top coordinator has elected to stay at his current school.

According to reports from Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports and The Athletic, and Pete Thamel of Yahoo, Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables was a candidate, but has since told Clemson officials that he’s staying.

Feldman earlier reported, “So many twists and turns on this Auburn coaching search… name we heard this morning that some key AU folks are hoping to hire as their new head coach.”

On Monday, AL.com also reported similar news as Thamel. The expectation is Venables will stay at Clemson. Venables has two sons, Tyler and Jake, currently playing at Clemson and makes $2.4 million annually as Dabo Swinney’s defensive coordinator.

Venables has been a rising star in the coaching ranks for many years.

He coached for 13 years (1999-11) at Oklahoma and three years (1996-98) at Kansas State. Before Clemson, he served as co-defensive coordinator (1999-03) and defensive coordinator at Oklahoma (2004-11).

In 2018, Clemson led the country in scoring defense (13.1 points per game) for the first time in school history. Ranked fourth in rushing defense (96.3 yards per game), fifth in total defense (285.9 yards per game), according to his Clemson bio.

He also received the 2016 Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. His 2016 group amassed 130 tackles for loss and a then-school-record 49 sacks. His teams led the NCAA in tackles for loss four seasons in a row from 2013-16.
